____ The Power Hog

Used my kill-a-watt to measure every device in the home. A bit surprised at the results.

Treadmill 5 watts (idle)
Ipod Mp3 Player 2 watts (idle)
Microwave 1 watt (idle)
HTPC and TV 3 watts (idle), 140 watts (running)
Home phone charger 2 watts
Light timer 1 watt (idle)
Alarm clock 1 watt (radio off), 2 watts (radio on)
Baby monitor 2 watts(idle and charging), video on 4 watts
TV 1 watt (idle)
Dell Monitor (24inch) 1 watt (standby), 33 watts (on)
HP Laptop 1watt (standby), 25 watts (on)
Netgear Router 3 watts
Printer 5 watts (on), 2 watts (standby)
Answering Machine 1 watt
iphone 4 watts (charging)
Cable modem with phone 6 watts
TIVO 25 watts (idle) ! Jumps to 40 watts when in use!

I bought a used Tivo with a lifetime subscription to avoid any monthly fees. Then I learned that the device can't be turned off. It has no off switch. It continually keeps the hard disk spinning. Tivo, a device created in the 21st century cost me almost $7 in electricity to run, even if its setup to not record anything. It consumes as much power as everything in the house combined (minus the fridge and hot water heater). That-is-nuts! So... to the TIVO engineers.... you suck.

For the record, I pay $0.39/KWh. I use half the power I used when I lived in CA, but the price of electricity is twice as much.
