The Future

Popular science magazine is predicting that in 20 years we will have robots to help us with our daily chores. Do you think people will camp out overnight for the robot release like they do the iphone/ipod/ipad? I have to get the New iRobot 2 4g with 32TB...

Then how do you get this robot home? You cannot pick one up. Do you tell it "ok, follow me home..". Maybe UPS delivers it.

What if you and your new robot don't get along? What if your robot has an attitude. Like when you aren't looking it drops the dishes on the floor intentionally ... "whoops". You can't fire the robot. What if the robot is like David from the movie Prometheus, such a well played character, bravo.

Explaining the simple things

My son and I were riding in the car yesterday and found a dead chicken.  Instead of asking me why the dead chicken crossed the road, he asked me what I was doing with the duck.... its not a duck, its a dead chicken.
Then I tried to explain what dead means.... "dead, done, finished, over, the end, .... Disassemble!"

Dream conundrums

It came upon me today that I have never used the internet in a dream. Its almost like the concept of the internet is forbidden. The possibility of getting answers outside of our knowledge base is not possible. All dream influences must come from within.

Time vs. Money

You can either have a s*load of money and no time, or a s*load of time and no money. Everyone in between is getting wasted and killing time. Personally, I would take time over money. There are ways to entertain yourself on a budget.

Working on this

http://m.wikihow.com/Control-Your-Dreams

They don't make them like they used to

They are re-releasing the H1/Humvee to the civilian market. They won't be cheap. $59K gets you a shell kit. No engine, no interior, soft doors, soft top, no special perks (like the winch, CTIS, runflats, power options, etc).... Still,.... if I wasn't bogged down by building up the family farm I would sell mine and get this one :). I have realized over the last few years that my lifestyle really means I should drive cars with - little or no interior (drain plugs in the floor are a must), - maybe power windows (nothing else needs to be power, i.e. locks, mirrors, sunroof) - doors can be optional - 4WD - safe [for now, add this to my Christmas wish list, either 2 door or slantback please] http://www.hummerguy.net/hummer-news/am-general-re-entering-civilian-vehicle-marketplace-with-humvee-c-series-kit-car

Studying the dynamics of the hive

Yesterday the hive decided to move on its own out of the boxes. I found them about 30 feet from the hive box. I found them by almost accidentally stepping on the them. I went home to get my suit, returned and scooped them up and returned them to the box.Lets just say they weren't happy about being moved.  I found about 50 stingers in my welding gloves.Luckily only a few pierced through far enough.

As I was making trips back and forth I discovered the queen crawling on the ground. I scooped her up and quickly ran her to the box. The rest of the hive started swarming back to the old home. I think they were tripped out by the new box and getting attacked by ants.
Here is a video I took yesterday.

They were still around today, doing some housecleaning.

The dynamics are interesting. I watched them carry out the dead. Which I had known they do as part of their house keeping, but what was a shocker was they also carried out weak bees, but instead of dumping them outside the door on the ground below, a single bee would carry the dead off to the field and drop them off about 45 feet away.... that is crazy. I guess its all about the good of the hive. Hard to think about the good of the hive when a bee's life is only 2 months or so.

So much to learn.

Who is Spike Jonze

Sometimes the internet leads you on a journey. One thing leads to another that leads to another.

Someone posted this video

Mr Little Jeans - The Suburbs (Arcade Fire cover)

A catchy little tune. Turns out its a cover for:

Arcade Fire - The suburbs.

Which is what led me to the robo luv video. Then the 28 minute video short scenes from the suburbs.  Then to his Wikipedia page Spike Jonze.  Turns out he has directed lots of videos. The jackass series, the Beastie Boys Sabotage video, and others. I will have to keep the journey going. See where else this takes me.

Still tinkering with the chicken coop

I changed the roof design to something simpler. I need to just pull a few hours together and finish it up.... been distracted by many other things.

Are you above or below angry bees?

Jimmy (local Bee officianado/expert) and I went to extract a bee hive from a porch overhang. We were unsure if the bees were in the wall or the soffet of the overhang. We started by cutting up the wall (removing the fascia), then proceeded to removing the soffet. We found them between the floor joists. About a half dozen combs. Lots of brood, not a lot of honey. We took the comb and placed them in the frames, and the frames in the box. After we realized we were still missing the queen. The survival rate of a queenless hive is pretty low. We could see that the bees were swarming back towards the house. We began to cut more and more. We realized we were overwhelmed by the sheer number of bees and not being able to locate the queen visually. There must have been several thousand bees.

We borrowed a "bee vacuum" from another local bee keeper (named Ya). The Bee vacuum is a bee safe vacuum for collecting a large number of bees.  Its weird when you grab a handful of bees and it feels like firm jello.  We were able to collect a pretty fair amount of the hive. Including what we believe to be the queen (as the swarm quickly started gathering on the vacuum.

I accidentally tipped over the vacuum filter (full of bees) they didn't like that at all. All of sudden the buzz volume went from a 5 to a 9. They all start buzzing and flapping their wings (signalling danger).

That night we moved the bees over to my new place and set them up. They were pissed by nightfall. They were following me everywhere with quite a ferrociousness. They were tame all day, but when they were pissed, they got piiiissed. Now I know what angry bees are like.  Next is to learn what angry african bees are like (fortunately we don't have the African bees here (yet)).

Now to see if they survive in their new home.

When we arrived just a few bees were outside. The bees were entering the house under the flashing, but we were unable to tell if they were going up between the studs to the window, or down into the overhang.

The comb

Me helping pull the comb out.

Serious bees, still not pissed, just a little confused that their home is gone.

In the vacuum canister, waiting to be transported.

I brought a piece of brood comb home for Nathan. we were able to watch this bee come out (born) this morning during breakfast.

Some kids

I was in SF last week and Nathan was staring at a T-Rex skeleton. Nathan would run around and scream " T-Rex... Rahhhh..".

Another 7 maybe 8 year old Indian boy walks up with his mom, and starts naming all the bones of the leg. Then his mom starts to correct him on some of the foot bones.

Then I look at my boy, "Rahhh...."

I got work to do.

The Anti-Q

Netflix should have an anti-queue feature. Its basically a list of movies that you never want to watch about or hear about.

The notebook, Mama Mia, the king's speech, the Artist, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Phonebooth, the Help,

the list goes on.

Then on top of that, you should be able to compound your double anti-list by not just banning a movie, but take the worst movie and double ban it, meaning indicate to netflix you want nothing to do with all the actors in a particular movie, and ban them for acting in such a stupid movie.

Some new music

On a somewhat similar note. I know who/what I am going for as for next Halloween. Will anyone recognize John Oates.

Creative writing for 12 year olds

When is it appropriate for a man to write like a 12 year old, and say "OMG"?
I think if I saw a devastating mushroom cloud on the horizon. Maybe....
If I witnessed a school bus full of children get scooped up by a tornado, I might say Oh my god.
But if I saw a funny picture of a cat with its paw on its genitals, I don't think I would say oh my god.

Sucky Odds

Went to the local 2012 Home Show, which the local contractors association (known as CAK) advertised "Win $25,000 Cash, The first 1,000 adults over the age of 21 receive the opportunity"....

How misleading. The game, a scratch off ticket with 6x6 squares. The objective scratch only 6 square and reveal 6 stars, and you win. So I get up there, scratch mine, first one is wrong, game over. Guy mentions that someone got 3 stars, then the 4th one was off.

Little advertisement to the odds of winning.  Lets go through the probability
P = P(6|36) * P(5|35) * P(4|34) * P(3|33) * P(2|32) * P(1:31)
P = 0.16 * 0.14 * 0.12 * 0.09 * 0.06 * 0.03
P = 4.3 * 10^-7
1:2.3Million
Yeah.. nice odds. thanks
Pretty much means they weren't planning on giving any money away. They might as well have offered $1Million.

Healthy Community Design

A speaker was visiting our community (I did not attend) who talked about healthy communities. The topic was why don't we stop separating housing and commercial areas. If housing and commercial areas were more mixed, it would promote healthier lifestyles since people wouldn't have to drive everywhere. This got me thinking about the last 5 homes I lived in, none of them were walking distance to anything. If you think about the San Jose area, there are several newer town home communities built around or near shopping areas. While these are ideal they are way too crowded. This got me thinking that we have been going all wrong with community development. The communities should be centered around shopping areas and parks, with smaller homes, apartments, then lead outward into larger lots, almost like mini-cities (with urban and suburban environments)...

The library

I woke up to Nathan reading books in his room. He likes to make a big pile of them in the middle of the floor. I walked by his room and asked if he could clean them up while I make breakfast. Walked back 10 minutes later and he said he is done. Well... he gets an A for effort.

Popcorn recipe

This is some good popcorn.

I can't see why this cannot be made at home (- the bee pollen)
Pollen Popcorn” there and comes pre-mixed, using organic popcorn, macadamia nut oil, nutritional yeast, dehydrated bee pollen, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and sea salt. It’s made in Hawaii by North Shore Naturals.
